The Theory Test
You will need to hold the appropriate provisional driving licence to be able to book your theory test.
If you want to learn to drive a lorry you will need to book LGV theory tests or PCV if you want to learn to drive a minibus/bus/coach.
There are three different theory tests for both LGV and PCV.
Professional lorry driver – You need to book:
- Module 1a – LGV Multiple Choice
- Module 1b – LGV Hazard Perception
- Module 2 – LGV Driver CPC Case Studies
Professional minibus/coach/bus driver – You need to book:
- Module 1a – PCV Multiple Choice
- Module 1b – PCV Hazard Perception
- Module 2 – PCV Driver CPC Case Studies
Non-Professional minibus/coach driver
- You do not need do take the PCV CPC Case Studies
Non-Professional lorry driver, such as a horsebox or ambulance – you do not need do take the LGV CPC Case Studies
If you are a pre-1997 car driver you may have difficulty booking your Module 2 – phone 0300 200 1122 to book it manually as an ‘acquired rights’ driver.

Visit the official government website to book your test
You do not need to retake the theory test, before book a driving test to upgrade:
- from category C1 (medium vehicles) to category C (large vehicles) unless you got your C1 entitlement from passing a car driving test
- from category D1 (minibus) to category D (bus)
- any licence to be able to tow a trailer
